Description

From http://www.interment.net/data/us/ca/sanbenito/county/index.htm Lat: 36° 48' 59"N, Lon: 121° 23' 07"W, approx Contributed by Wes Leiser, Jul 22, 2003 [wesl@hollinet.com]. Total records = 346. To reach cemetery from hwy 101 take Hollister/San Juan Bautista Exit/156 east exit. Drive 7 miles turn right on Union Road. Drive 4 miles and turn right on Southside Road. Cemetery on the right side of road 1 mile down. San Benito County Cemetery started 1889-1968. San Benito County owns the cemetery however it is maintained by the San Benito County Cemetery Preservation Society and some what by the county. Other names the cemetery went by are; County Cemetery, Hollister Cemetery, Potters Field, County Hospital Cemetery, County Farm Cemetery and Public Cemetery. The last person buried there was in 1968. This was a potters cemetery. Very little expense was made for grave markers. If there was family around at the burial time maybe a wood marker would be used otherwise the county would use a little metal marker but over the years the name or number on the markers have since vanished. Cemetery is in fair shape. Only 5 graves are identified, the rest are unknown. This list was started several years ago, I verified and corrected it over the past two years completing it last month, which would be June of 2003. - Wes Leiser
